Obituary for Jadwiga "Harriet" Maria Aksamit (Czulo)

AKSAMIT, Jadwiga Maria “Harriet” - passed away at the Trenton Memorial Hospital on Saturday, June 8, 2019. Her loving husband and forever soulmate, Walter, was at her side as were her daughter, Christina, and son-in-law, Tom.

Harriet Aksamit of Brighton, was born in Poland to the late Franciszek Czulo and Tekla Suprunowicz. Her memory will be cherished by her children Christina and Tom Baker of Roslin, Alicia and Scott Thornton of Calgary, and Walter Jr. of Maryland as well as her brother Frank and sister-in-law Betty Czulo of Brighton, sister Maria and brother-in-law Joseph Bak of Selwyn, sister-in-law Janina Czulo of Toronto, sister-in-law Eugenia and brother-in-law Stanley Flondro of Chicago. Nanny “Babcia” will always hold a special place in the hearts of her eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Aunt “Ciocia Jadzia” will be fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews and their children. She now joins her predeceased siblings Stanislaw, Tadeusz, and Michael Czulo, Helena Brazda Mofina and brothers-in-law Ignacy Brazda and Stan Mofina.

Many neighbours and friends have already learned about the incredible journey that carried her around the globe to the full life she and Walter built in Canada. Nothing was more important to Harriet than her family and the community of Brighton. Harriet’s kind and generous heart was known by all who came to her counter at Scanlon’s Pharmacy, as well as those she helped as a volunteer at Trenton Memorial Hospital, Applefest Lodge and Brighton Clothing Depot. As a leader in the community, Harriet held executive positions as an active member of the Holy Angels' Parish Catholic Women's League, and she and Walter were two of the founding members of the Quinte Polonia. Her spirit will continue to live on in the works of compassion, including the many children throughout the world who have been warmed by her hand-knit sweaters. Whenever you take the time to “stop and smell the roses”, think of Harriet and her love of St. Therese of the Little Flower.

A Memorial Mass will be held at Holy Angels Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, June 22, 2019 at 11:00 o’clock; Father Christopher Reynolds officiating, concelebrant Father Luis Lapinid. Cremation with Interment at the Codrington Roman Catholic Cemetery to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation will be greatly appreciated by the family.
